False. This is the annual "Mars will be as bright as the Moon!" hoax that goes around every August.
August the 27th of this year (2009) is when Mars is to be the closest it has ever been to the earth. It is supposedly to be about the same size in the sky as the moon.
well what i have read about the 27th of august is that mars will be so close to earth that you can see it as you can see the moon , that happens every 2500 years
No. This is a repeat of a hoax from 2006. At it's nearest Mars will only look about 500 times smaller than the Moon.
Dear all, Two moons on 27th August 2010 27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for.... Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles off earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 @ 11:00 PM (UAE Local Time). It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again.
on august 26th 2010, mars is coming very close to earth--so you should be able to see it from your front lawn or out your window. Supposedly Mars will look as large as the moon from the sky.
On August 27th 2003, Mars was at its closest to Earth for some time - still a distance of 56 million km, but some communication at the time hyped it up a bit more than necessary (it was never as bright or as big as the full moon). Every year since then, an email has been circulated around the internet claiming various things like: * "no human being has seen in recorded history" * "NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN" * "The Red Planet is about to be spectacular" * "Mars will look as bright as the full moon" * "It will look like the earth has 2 moons" and that on August 27th everyone should race outside and look at Mars. It's all not true. Mars reaches opposition in late January, 2010, and even then it will still just look like a medium-brightness red star. So tell your friends it's a hoax and it's spam, and wait until this time next year when you start receiving them again
Mars is always larger than the moon. However, I think you mean will it appear bigger than our moon. No - never - not even close.
Nope I got that email to I checked it on NASA's site it will not be bigger than the moon but it will be visible but it willl only look like a star.
No. It is physically impossible for the planet Mars to appear in earth's sky, as close as the Moon. At its closest, Mars is about 40 million miles away. The Moon is only about 238,000 miles. ______________________ You are probably referring to the "Mars Hoax" e-mails that come around every August 27. On August 27, 2003, Mars did come a little closer than usual to the Earth; it was "only" 0.37272 AU away, or about 34.6 MILLION miles. A breathtakingly hysterical e-mail went around declaring that Mars would look AS BIG AS THE FULL MOON, and then added in small type on the next page, "when seen through a 75-power telescope". In 2010, the closest approach to Mars occurred on January 29, 2010, at an entirely unimpressive 0.664 AU, or about 60 million miles. The next "fairly close" CPA to Mars will be on July 27, 2018, at a distance of 0.384 AU.
Nothing will happen on August 27, 2014 concerning the moon. There is hoax going around about Mars, it is not true.
Mars never gets much larger than an orange coloured point of light
