In many places that is still the case however on average in the western industrialised nation women are increasingly outnumbering men in the work place. this is probably the result of the fact that they are paid approximately 18% less then men and are also often the sole providers for single parent family's.
Hundreds of years ago, it was commonly agreed that men were the bread-winners and women stayed at home. Sociologists call this "gender roles," referring to how men customarily were expected to act in a dominant way, while women were supposed to be obedient and submissive to them. The man was expected to work, the woman was expected to have children. But in the modern world, gender roles are not as rigid as they used to be, nor are families as large. This is important because a woman who does not have numerous children is able to have a career if she wants to do so; in olden times, being a mother WAS her career, and it was considered unusual if she wanted to do something else.
Today, while many men are in fact the primary source of income in their marriage, a majority of women in the west are working, and some have good jobs. In poorer countries, gender roles may be more traditional, with women expected to stay home and have large families. But in North America and much of Europe, as well as in other parts of the industrialized world, there is family planning, and with smaller families, women are more able to be more flexible about their life. Some married women do in fact stay home with their children for a while, but then go back to work. And some women have careers and choose to continue with them even after marriage.
If you are very traditional, you may believe a married man should work and his wife should stay home. Some religious people interpret The Bible in that way, saying that the man is the head of the woman, and he should be in charge. (But it should be noted that even the Bible refers to women who worked, such as Deborah, who was a judge, and several of the prophets who were female.) Thus, beyond what religion may say about gender roles, more and more couples today are deciding what is best for them and for their relationship. And more women are graduating from college and deciding they want to work. In fact, in a bad economy, having two salaries can be helpful. Therefore, if the husband and wife agree upon it, there is no reason that a woman working should be harmful to a marriage.
