A microphone is an input. It takes sound from the environment and converts it into electrical signals that a computer can understand.

It is an input device because it accepts sound from the environment and converts it to electric signals a computer can understand. There are various microphones, such as a condenser mic, dynamic mic, ribbon mic, or USB mic.

You probably think of an audio input when you think of a microphone. The microphone isn't just for recording audio, though. It can also be an input for some things like:

  1. Voice commands on your computer and smartphone

  2. Signing your name to an electronic document

  3. Recording video or voice chat

Microphones produce a voltage in relation to sound. This voltage can be used as in input to an amplifier or computer. In computer terminology microphones are an 'input' device. They take data from the outside world and present it to the computer for processing.
Amplifiers take a small signal and and produce a large signal out. Microphones provide the small signal in.
The sockets are therefore maked as 'input'.
