They are the real bulldogs. Pitbull was used to separate them from the other bulldogs that really can not control bulls for not having the ability. The pit part of the name came from the place where the fights use to take place in the early days.

Pit bulls originated as a 50/50 mix between the Olde Bulldogge and an unknown old breed terrier- thus why they were originally referred to as the Bull And Terrier when they were first developed. They share common ancestry due to this crossbreeding, and belong to the same group of dogs- Molossers. This refers to a type of dog that is solidly built, exhibiting great strength, large sized skulls, snub noses, and great drive. This includes everything from Mastiffs to pugs, as well as the American Pit Bull Terrier and all modern bulldog and bulldog-based breeds.
