The term "Nanny Dog" has oftentimes been used to describe the group of breeds commonly known as Pit Bulls. This includes the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The name "Nanny Dog" originates from a time when Pit Bulls were still fought legally at organised fights, and the practice was a popular blood sport. Dogs were often badly maimed and injured during such fights and as such had to be carried home - oftentimes being placed in the child's pushchair with the child on the way back from fights as the dogs were trained purely for dog-on-dog aggression. The breeds' amiability and trustworthiness with children has prevailed throughout the years, despite common misconceptions. It is important to remember that although capable of unmatchable strength and tenacity, this breed was never bred for human aggression as it was never intended as a guard dog. Unfortunately, the breed is now rarely seen for its true qualities as the "Nanny Dog" due entirely to irresponsible owners. When given the right home, however, the breeds real "Nanny Dog" qualities shine through.
