Best Answer

A magnet can be made in the shape of a ring but the poles run from the front to the back of the ring not around it. However it should be kept in mind that rings such that are worn are generally not made of material that is magnetic.

What is the function of a split ring commutator?

The split rings cause the direction of the magnetic field in the armature to change direction as the motor rotates. If this didn't happen the motor would not rotate. Slip rings can be used for an AC motor which causes the direction of the magnetic field to change with the AC waveform.

The purpose of using magnetic ear rings is to avoid the necessity to pierce ones ears. Some people find this too painful to go through but would still like to wear jewelry on their ears.

Why does an ac contactor need shading rings?

In a AC contactor, a shaded ring is essential to prevent it from buzzing twice a cycle. Ac contactor takes a input of alternating voltage resulting an alternating current and flux through its windings. So The contactor buzzes each time the magnitude of alternating magnetic field reaches zero. The shaded rings are provided at some part of the core. When the alternating flux cuts them the produce another alternating magnetic field which is out of phase from the main magnetic field. So the resultant magnetic field no more zero at the contacts and which prevents the contact from buzzing.

Who invented magnetic core memories for the computer?

no idea, but its called a hard drive. Core memory has nothing whatsoever to do with hard drives. Core memory is more analogous to RAM, but was made of small metal or ceramic rings through which wires were threaded. Applying voltages to the wires changed the magnetic polarity of the rings, allowing them to represent "on" and "off" states. See the Related Link for much more information.

What will happen if the slip ring connection is open?

The motor will not work. The slip rings are used to in conjunction with the brushes to deliver a current to the rotor. The set of rings are a complete electrical circuit within the motor. In a synchronous motor the rings are used to supply voltage to the rotors pole coils. In operation these coil poles follow the rotating magnetic field in the stator.
