The Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer entered service in 2009A,B however it has not as yet received it's air defence missile system (not due to enter service till 2011)B but does however mount the 4.5" (114 mm) gun system and can carry helicopters capable of launching anti ship and submarine munitions.C,D
As such the failure to procure and develop the anti air missile capability in time to mount it on the Type 45 before its in service data has been criticised in both the UK media and by MPs in the Houses of ParliamentA,B as this failure renders the Type 45 incapable of performing it's primary air defence function. This has led to an extension of service for the Type 42 destroyer to cover the gap in air defence capability.B
