A properly functioning democracy IS the majority - the people - majority rule, minority rights. While there is always room for criticism, it should be constructive, not constant carping by the self-interested or the unrealistically idealistic or those seeking indirect power over the majority. Vocal minorities seek to overthrow democracy - the will of the majority - to implement their own minority agenda over the majority. Such a system of rule by the minority over the majority is Oligarchy, not Democracy.
Democracy is bad because the majority has complete power over the minority.
The first section of the Declaration of Independence defines democracy.
No I don't. The way our government is set up now is meant to protect the minority. If it was a direct democracy, the majority would continually have control, and the minority would eventually become fed up to the point that they revolted.

Democracy as we know it IS "a government that is run by each and every persons own vote". The problem with Democracy is that it is tyranny of the majority over the minority. The U.S. Government was set up as a Constitutional Republic, NOT a Democracy, so that even the minority has a voice, and so the Majority doesn't rule over the Minority. - Pat Riot
Countermajoritarianism and a respect for minority rights are required in a liberal democracy.

Minority... for Novanet
tyranny through suppression of the minority
A majority faction is generally more difficult to control in a standard democracy because, with one vote per person, they will overall have more votes than a minority faction, therefore their ideas will come into effect. To stifle a minority faction one must merely outvote them, whereas, oftentimes for majority factions you must spread the vote to many smaller (state) governments. This is where the "Republic" form of democracy was suggested by James Madison, which allows representatives to make informed decisions rather than fall to "schemes of oppression" of the majority people. So, in short, majority's harder to hold back. You just have to outvote minority.
