"Universal joint" - describes the flexible joint/connection on a driveshaft from the transmission to the differential/drive-wheels.

Common usage is for rear-wheel drive configurations.

For front-wheel drive vehicles, the part that does the same thing is commonly known as the
Constant Velocity (CV) joint.

CV Joint Tidbits:
  • Worn-out? The primary symptom of a failing CV joint is a clicking noise from a front wheel when turning. Those are the internal parts coming looser and looser

  • The corrugated rubber boots that cover the CV joint can break open. This allows dirt and road contaminants to get into, and destroy it

There are boot repairs kits available - but - if yours broke, plan on sometime in the near future to have to deal with failed CV joint

  • Fixing or replacing - the CV joint can be "repaired" - BUT - 99% of the time, the entire 'half-axle' is replaced as an assembly.

Surprisingly, half-axles are not very expensive (say around $80), and even labor to have it replaced isn't very much. For example, I paid $150 to have one replaced.

Bonus Material...
  • Replacing a half-axle - This is a very "doable" project for a moderately experienced backyard mechanic, with some specific tools:
    • 30mm socket for the axle nut
    • Strong impact wrench or really long pipe to put on the socket wrench (170-200 ft. lbs!)
    • 3 arm gear-puller is strongly recommended - for pushing the axle out of the steering knuckle. I've done it with and without one - do yourself a favor an beg, borrow, rent or buy one!
    • Pittman arm puller - for breaking the tie-rod end loose from the steering knuckle without damaging it.
This is much more than the question asked for, but I was feeling kinda full-o-words this morning...
