Sikh history is one which has been made by both men and women. There are many, many outstanding Sikh women. The Gurus' wives led highly spiritual and independent lives. Mata Sundri ji led the Sikhs for a long period after Guru Gobind Singh returned to his heavenly home. Sada Kaur was a famous Sikh Jathedar and ally of Ranjit Singh who made possible the Sikh empire of the 19th Century. The list of important Sikh women is endless.

The tenth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji gave these titles of Sikhs. These titles goes as Singh for men and kaur for women, where Singh means Lion signifying Bravery and Kaur means Princess signifying beauty and grace. Sikhs used these titles as their middle name and all Sikh men have Singh as their middle name and all Sikh women have Kaur as their middle name. What do Sikh brides wear?

Sikh women don't have any certain restrictions to what they can or cannot wear around the house, or in general. There is not a large difference in attire between the two. Many Sikh women who have more Indian roots may wear a traditional Punjabi suit around the house. As far as head coverings, Sikh women can cover their heads with a chunni (or head scarf) or wear a dastaar (turban). Again, not all Sikh women do this, but it is common and a popular option.

Was there any female Gurus?

Sadly not - don't you think that's a little ironic considering they believe in men and women equality? Hope that was helpful :) Clarification: No, there were not any females Gurus. But during the period of Masand System, which was started by 3rd Sikh Gurus for the preaching of Sikhism as it was gaining growth. There were 8 women among the 24 masands who were given the authority to preach the teachings of Gurus. Please note, as for being sad for not having any female Sikh Guru, indeed it would have been great if there was one but then again succession of Guruship was not a political or social matter or economic condition. One can also say why Guru Nanak did not appoint his sons as his successor. And what is more important is that, regardless if we had female Sikh Gurus or not, if the Gurus have presented in their teachings the equality of men and women, then we should take it from there, rather wondering why were not there any female Sikh Gurus. Thank You
