Actually, they are in the sea. All seas, the world over. The area around San Onofre is no different. While three of the top four shark species (Great White Sharks, bull sharks, and tiger sharks) noted for unprovoked attacks on humans frequent the area, your chances of being attacked or killed by a shark is minimal. You really are more likely to be struck by lightning. There are other species of shark, such as Sand sharks, Leopard sharks and Hammerhead sharks that ply these waters.

These are words from the Beach Boy's song "Surfin' USA". It is intended to be a place name. However the spelling is wrong. It is actually San Onofre which is a State Beach in California just south of San Clemente. It's not clear when the error occurred, very possibly when the song was originally written.
