Pentecost is not a Jewish festival and a such we do not celebrate it - thus, there are no dates for the Jewish Pentecost since no such thing exists. The Christian Pentecost, however, is related to the Jewish Shavuot which celebrates the day when the Israelites gathered at Mount Sinai and received the Torah from G-d. There is some controversy regarding the exact date of Shavuot with one camp claiming that it falls on the exact date that the above events took place on Mount Sinai and others claiming that it falls on the date arrived at by the Counting of the Omer, which gives a day fifty days after the beginning of the Counting which itself falls on the second day of Pesach (Passover). Most Jews settle for the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan, which corresponds to mid May or early June on the secular calendar. Since the Hebrew calendar is based on both lunar and solar cycles, making it considerably more complex than the solar-based secular calendar, Hebrew dates fall on different secular dates - for example, in 2011 the sixth day of Sivan will correspond to the 7th of June. In 2012, it will begin on 26th of May, in 2013 on the 14th of May and in 2014 on the 3rd of June. Meanwhile, Pentecost falls seven weeks after Easter Sunday - just as Shavuot falls seven weeks after the second day of Pesach - and the date of Easter Sunday is itself usually in the same week as the beginning of Pesach (however, in three years of the nineteen year cycle followed by the Hebrew calendar, Pesach may fall up to a month after Easter).

Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ's followers. As Jews do not accept Christ as the Moshiach (Messiah), Pentecost can therefore not be a part of the Jewish religion. I suspect that these differences in the two calendars combined with the links between the Jewish Shavuot and Christian Pentecost are the source of your confusion.

Pentecost is a Christian occasion, but the word is sometimes employed as a (mis)translation of Shavuot, a Jewish festival (Leviticus ch.23). Shavuot is the sixth of Sivan (late Spring). Outside of Israel, it is celebrated for two days, the 6th and 7th of Sivan. This is because the Jewish proclamation of the New Moon each month took time to reach those who lived far away (see the Talmud, Rosh Hashanah 21a and 30b).

What is the difference between the Jewish Pentecost and the Maltese pentecost?

A:The Jewish Pentecost or Shavuot, celebrated from the second century BCE onwards in memory of the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai, takes place fifty days after Passover. Numbers 11:25 says that on the day of the Jewish Pentecost, the spirit of God came down on the seventy elders and they began to prophesy in ecstasy. The 'Maltese' Pentecost is the Christian Pentecost and takes place fifty days after Easter, which originally coincided with the Passover. Acts of the Apostles says that on the day of Pentecost, everyone that was in the upper room, was filled with the Holy Spirit coming down on them as tongues of fire and the began to speak in tongues as the spirit gave them the utterance. There are parallels to the earlier account in the story of the Christian Pentecost, which was probably inspired by the Jewish Pentecost.

How long after Pentecost was Stephen stoned to death?

Acts ofthe Apostles tells us that Pentecost occurred fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus, but is unclear as to exacly when Stephen was stoned to death. However, it is quite possible that neither event was really historical. The Jews had celebrated a Pentecost since the second century BCE and there are parallels of timing and content between the Jewish Pentecost and the story of the Christian Pentecost, which seems to have been inspired by the Jewish Pentecost. Also, Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says that we can never verify the martyrdom or even existence of Stephen. With both events unlikely to have really happened, there is no real answer to this question.

What is Pentecost the Jewish celebration of?

A:The Jewish Pentecost, also known as Shavuot, has striking similarities to the Christian Pentecost, but commemorates an earlier event, the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai. It takes place fifty days after Passover, just as the Christian Pentecost takes place fifty days after Easter. Numbers 11:25 tells us that on that occasion, the spirit of God came down on the seventy elders and they began to prophesy in ecstasy, just as Acts chapter 2 tells of the Holy Spirit coming down on those in the upper room and they spoke in tongues as the spirit gave them the utterance. The Christian Pentecost story is a completely different celebration, but was seemingly inspired by the Jewish one.

What happened between the passover and pentcost?

In the Jewish tradition, the interval between the festivals of Passover (Pesach) and Pentecost (Shavuot) is known as the Omer, and is characterized by a special blessing said every evening counting the days between the two festivals. This is a period of spiritual preparation for Pentecost, a festival that remembers God's giving the Torah to Moses at Mount Sinai.
