The Miniature Bulldog or "Toy Bulldog", as it's also known, is a cross between an English Bulldog and a Pug thought to be extinct. They were developed and used to create the French Bulldog. Which contrary to popular belief, did not originate in France but in England along side of the Boston Terrier, a cross between the Toy Bulldog, the White English Terrier, along with an infusion of French Bulldog in the 19th Century. The "Miniature Bulldog"/"Toy Bulldog" was developed by Lace Makers and Artisans in the 19th Century.

However, many of the "Toy Bulldogs" were pushed out of England in the mid- to late 19th century as they were perceived as a threat to the English Bulldogbreed.

In the early 21st century, breeders were advertising "Miniature Bulldogs", but these seem to be newly created Bulldog - Pug crossbreeds.

What was the Bull Terrier first bred for?

The French Bulldog originated in 19th Century Nottingham, England, where Lace makers decided to make a smaller, miniature, lap version of the English Bulldog, that were referred to as "toy" bulldogs. In the 1860's when the Industrial Revolution drove the craftsmen to France they took their dogs with them. The toy bulldogs became popular in France and were given the name the, "French Bulldog". The breed eventually made its way back to England for dog shows. The Britts were not happy with the name "French" given to a dog that was originally from England, however the name "French Bulldog" stuck.

Can french bulldogs swim?

Most dogs can swim; some better than others. Some dogs love water and others don't, but from the time of wild dogs they can swim for self preservation. Some dogs are water dogs and it comes naturally, but since breeders have inter bred dogs not all dogs know how to swim instinctively and can be taught to swim. Not All dogs can swim. Bulldogs have a lot of trouble swimming because their bodies are so heavily built and its harder for them to breath because of their pushed in faces. English bulldogs can't swim but some french bulldogs can- it really depends on how fit your dog is and the way it is built. Just to be safe though I would always strap a life jacket on your dog when you're around water.Yes, French Bulldogs can swim, but the owner must constantly watch their dog. Because many Bulldog traits are a pushed in snout they can have problems breathing. If you take your French Bulldog for a swim keep them in more shallow water and don't expect them to fetch a stick or other toy too far off shore. Be vigilant while around your dog to be sure they don't have any problems in the water. Dogs can drown like people. To see a French Bulldog swim please go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ysrtp4ZbWcBulldogs of any type have difficulty breathing and in water that can become exasperated by water intake, as their snout is so close to the water level. A dog life jacket keeps a dog's head above water, gives buoyancy to prevent drowning and lessens water ingestion, which if salt water, is highly dangerous to dogs.

Where is a britishbulldog toy at?

Playthings aside, there is no such thing as a toy or miniature English Bulldog- this is not an accepted variety by the American Kennel Club. The idea of a kid bulldog is certainly appealing, but no such breed has been evolved- or if it does exist- it has not been accepted by the Kennel Club, which is the big authority in Dogdom. The Pit Bull is also not a recognized breed.
