Not any more. As of August 1st, 2008, its now illegal to mount your plate vertically. I'm not sure what they do though. They may fine you or they may just give you a fix it ticket. I spose it depends on your attitude.

vehicle, each securely fastened, except number plates assigned to a motorcycle, trailer, or
housetrailer must be attached to the rear thereof.
Side mount license plates are illegal to have on motorcycles in the state of Michigan. The plates must be mounted horizontally on the fender.
Right now you can have side mounted vertical license plates in Iowa. They are moving to make these illegal however and it is best to avoid mounting them like this.

Just as on a car, a motorcycle tag has to be placed in the rear on the spot reserved for it. If there's no place for the tag, it's not a street-legal bike.- - - - - - - - To improve on this answer. On a motorcycle, they have after market side plate mounts and vertical mounts. Depending on what state (refer to your State Manual) you are in, maybe be legal/illegal. On my motorcyle, i have a after market vertical side plate mount, which is legal in the state of CT. Some other states, prohibit any vertical license plates.Call the DMV or State Police in your state for more information about motorcycles or find it on line.
Yes a side mounted licence plate is legal in the state of Georgia. The only stipulations are that it is mounted horizontally and is illuminated. The vertical mounted plates( the ones you see in the parts magazines) are not.
