During the 1800's (Frontier days), the west was anything west of the Mississippi River; meaning Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, N & S Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington (state), Oregon, and California...even though those states WEREN'T states yet; they were territories or military governed (such as California). By the early 1900's with just about every land settled; all of those states except for Nevada, California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington (state), and possibly Montana & Idaho became known as the MID-WEST states. With California and rest being referred to as the FAR WEST (states). Today, in the 21st century, most people probably refer to California, Oregon, Washington (state), Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Utah, and Montana as western states. It's a toss up between Texas and New Mexico as they're just below Colorado and Kansas which are the HEART of the US continent...that is to say the MID-WEST!
