VW Beetles are very nice cars with decent fuel economy. I would suggest it for a first car. The fuel economy on average is about 25 MPG or so. The only bad thing about them is that in the winter, they don't get very good heat. Great car though.
It's the teenager you need to worry about. Not the kind of car.

It was a mid-1960's Volkswagen Beetle. In all probability it was several Beetles, possibly of varying years (Beetles change almost imperceptibly from year to year).
It depends on the year of the car. Older beetles were air cooled and did not use any water.
A good car to purchase is Volkswagen Golf 5 series. Dodge Viper
If you can and will work on a car, they're good cars. The newest Volkswagen Beetle in the United States is 29 years old and most are well over 30, so they require a lot of maintenance. Keep up on it, and the car is reliable. If you can't or won't work on a car, don't get one because you'll be stranded a lot.
