How does a tulip spread its seed?
If you want the tulip to be "true" (exactly like the parent) in the next generation, they you harvest the new bulbs. However, if you are working on new colors, shapes, etc. then the tulip can have seeds in a seed pod high on a stem where the flower used to be. Dispersal of the seed is by dropping on site or carry off by animals.

Why do bulbs stay in the ground and produce flowers?
The bulb has grown from a tulip seed. Seeds develop at the base of the tulip flower. It takes 5-7 years for a tulip seed to grow into a bulb and produce the stem, leaves, and flower. The bulb stores food produced by the leaves during photosynthesis and uses it to produce next year's flower, leaves and stem. They have roots to absorb water and nutrients for the tulip plant. Bulbs can multiply underground and be separated from each other, planted in new locations, and produce their own tulips.

Is a tulip a living thing?
Oh, yes, a tulip is definitely living. If you only have a tulip bulb, that is called the dormant state. There is a plant inside waiting to get out and see what the world is all about. At the proper time and temperature, with the help of a certain amount of light and nutrients, the plant will make its way up and out of the bulb. There it will absorb light energy, soil nutrients and water, and eventually produce a flower. The tulip ensures the next generation in two ways: the bulb will produce "bulbettes" and the flower may produce fertile seed. When it's finishes its reproductive job, the flower sits for a while as a leafy plant absorbing energy for next year's display. Eventually the leaves will die and the plant returns to its dormant bulb state.

Can other plants be planted around green tulip leaves or do leaves need go turn yellow before planting around them?
Yes, you can plant other flowers around tulips when their leaves are still green. Be careful not to dig into the tulip bulb when planting the new flowers. When tulip leaves are yellow and brown and drying, you can give them a small tug and they'll come free from the bulb. Don't remove them while still green - they're making food for the bulb to store for next year's blooms.

When is it safe to transplant a tulip tree?
According to researching on internet, it is best to transplant a tulip tree in the spring, March through June. I have one that came up voluntary in my flower bed. It has grown to about three foot in two years. I plan to hold it through this winter and transplant next spring. Mulching was recommended as well as good moisture when transplanted. Carol B
