They are equal in rights and obligations. You find many verses in quran stating equal rights for women and men explicitly. Prophet Muhammad says what means in English ' Woman and man are two halfs'. Islam religion, per Quran revelation to prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the first religion that stated woman rights in inheritance, in choosing her husband, in work, in education, ...etc. This was much linger before the UN issued women rights and before all the west giving these rights to women.

Answer 1

Yes, they are equal in the basic human rights, ritual worship obligations, and in the after life judgment in front of Allah (god in English). Islam religion is the first religion that ruled out the woman rights; even before all other religions and before the UN human rights. This was in the seventh century when women was looked at as an inferior creature that is deprived from all human rights.

In addition, in Islam, woman is regarded as complementing man in the family duties and responsibilities rather than competing with him. Also, religious obligations relevant to dressing that are required from woman are different than man.

In Addition to the below, which I fully agree upon:

  • Islam religion, per Quran revelation to prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is only version based on Quran and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teachings.
  • Islam religion is the first that incorporated full woman human rights; before all other faiths and before the UN decrees for womam human rights. Per Islam religion, woman was given for the first time the rights to work, to have her own properties, to have her shares in inheritance, to have the right to chose her husband and the right to seek divorce, the right to sign contracts, and the right to witness in front of the court, ... etc. All these rights, the woman was deprived from before the Quran revelation to prophet Muhammad. Refer to related questions below.
  • Islam is the religion of peace, love and tolerance. Terrosrism and violence are not related to Islam religion. Refer to related question below. If some Muslims are terrorists, then this like terrorists of all other religions, it doesn't mean the religion itself encourage terrorism.

Answer 2

In Islam, Women are seen as equal to men in all aspects, in this life and the hereafter. Of the 5 pillars of Islam, which Islam is based upon, all are required by both, which is to say they both are required to proclaim that there is no deity worthy of worship but God, and the Mohammed is his final messenger, to pray to God 5 times a day, to fast in the month of Ramadan, to give Zakat (donations for the needy and poor) and to make the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime. Many people come under the impression that women are not equal to men, but in reality, those who follow Islam correctly, by the holy Quran and by the teachings of the prophet, would see that oppression of women is wrong. In places like Afghanistan, where women are oppressed on a daily basis, they are ignorant. The men nor the women know the true nature of their religion. Another thing that makes women seem oppressed is the modest manner in which they dress. Many people say that since they must cover their heads, they are oppressed. this is not true. Women are told to cover their heads and dress modestly for the sole purpose of self respect. How can a woman respect herself if she walks in public in revealing clothes, attracting the inquisitive eyes of every man she passes? how can her husband feel truly comfortable with this scenario?

As you can see from the above paragraph, women are not prosecuted in Islam, the Muslim religion- in this life or the afterlife.

Someone said "no" before, but it is necessary to state why.

Today I learned in my Sociology class that women in Saudi Arabia are not even allowed to walk alone by the streets. They get detained by the religious police.

They cannot marry a man of a religion that is not Islam. But men can marry a christian, Islam or a Jew woman, and they can have more than four (or get married four times, not so sure about this one). Women cannot drive, or be in the same class with men at school, or having a male teacher unless with cameras inside the classroom. There is a lot more things they can't do.

Muslim women have the following rights per Islam teachings:

1. The right and duty to obtain education.

2. The right to have their own independent property.

3. The right to work to earn money if they need it or want it.

4. Equality of reward for equal deeds.

5. The right to express their opinion and be heard.

6. The right to provisions from the husband for all her needs and more.

7. The right to negotiate marriage terms of her choice.

8. The right to obtain divorce from her husband, even on the grounds that she simply can't stand him. (pls note that God deeply frowns upon divorce as a solution unless there is hardly any other alternative but it does not mean that men have more right to divorce their wives than women do.)

9. The right to keep all her own money (she is not responsible to maintain any relations).

10. The right to get sexual satisfaction from her husband.

11. custody of their children after divorce.

12. to refuse any marriage that does not please them.

Some non Muslims believe that women, in Islam, are viewed as utterly subservient to males. See their arguments below and accompanying hints on these arguments and seek the truth yourself:

  1. It is the historical logic that man can marry more than one woman but woman can't be married except for one man. It was the rule in all religions until the age of Islam per Quran revelation to prophet Muhammad that limited number of wives to only four and subject to certain conditions. Otherwise, what be the difference between the wife and the prostitute that has sex with more than one man.
  2. A Muslim man can marry a Jewish, Christian, or a Muslim woman but A Muslim woman can marry only a Muslim man. This is not an issue of inequality between men and woman in Islam. It is because Muslims believe in both The Bible and Torah together with Quran as holy God books and believe in Jesus and Moses together with Muhammad as God prophets while Jews and Christians believe neither in Quran as God holy book nor in Muhammad as a prophet. So, if a Muslim man marries a Christian or Jewish woman he will admit her to practice her worship rituals but if a Muslim woman marries a Christian or Jewish man she will not be sure that he will admit her to practice her Islamic worship rituals.
  3. A woman is not permitted to be alone with a man who is not a close relative applies for both man and woman and is not an issue of inequality. It is practice to guard against possibility to having sex (oral or intercourse sex) between both without being in a licit marriage.
  4. It is not true that women are totally excluded from any religious deliberations. They are just allowed for their convenience and at their own choice not to go to mosques if they find difficulties or feel insecurity in going to mosques and sufficient for them to practice their worship rituals at home. Since the start of Islam religion per Quran revelations, women are going to mosques equally as men.
  5. It is logic that clothing standards for women to be more restrictive than men. This is a matter of modesty and more respect to women. Islam doesn't allow women to persuade men by their sexy figures but rather by their good morals and cultures.
  6. Have sex with your women whenever and as often as you like. 2:223 [Hint: The verse is truncated. The the verse says (meaning English translation): {Your wives are as a tilth unto you; so approach your tilth when or how ye will; but plan in advance and do some good act for your souls beforehand (foreplay sex) ; and fear Allah. And know that ye are to meet Him (in the Hereafter), and give (these) good tidings to those who believe. (223)}. This means don't approach in sex with other than your wife that you can approach whenever you want. However, you should have foreplay sex first with her to please yourselves and get her acceptance. When approaching your wife fear Allah (God) and be kind to your wife.]
  7. Women have rights that are similar to men, but men are "a degree above them." 2:228 [Hint:again the verse says (meaning English translation): {... And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them, according to what is equitable; but men have a degree (of advantage) over them. And Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise. (228)}. The men degree above wives is only in money spending. It is the Islam obligation that Husbands are responsible of all marriage expenditures even if the wives work and earn money. The wife money is for her own investment to her own choice. This is explained explicitly in verse 4:34 that says: {Men are the support of women as God gives some more means than others, and because they spend of their wealth (to provide for them)}
  8. A woman is worth one-half a man. 2:282 [Hint: This is absolutely wrong. Only in two cases. First, in witness regarding money affairs, witness of two men is required or one man and two women. In other cases of witness, only woman witness is necessary. second, in inheritance by sons and daughters. the son inherit twice the daughter because it is the Islam obligation that Husbands are responsible of all marriage expenditures even if the wives work and earn money. The wife money is only for her own investment to her own choice. Accordingly, males are in more need of money than females.]
  9. "Marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four." 4:3 [Hint: Again the verse is truncated and miss understood. The verse says{marry women who are lawful for you, two, three, or four; but if you fear you cannot treat so many with equity, marry only one}.Accordingly, it is conditional to marry more than one. You must treat them equally, get the approval of previous wife before the new marriage, each wife to have independent and same level residence and receive same expenditure and appreciation, .... Because of the difficulty to fulfill these many conditions it very rare and very seldom to find one marrying more than wife. It is not like some Christian denominations that allow unconditional polygamy with unlimited number of wives]
  10. Males are to inherit twice that of females. 4:11 [Hint: This is only in one case. When the one passing away has sons and daughters. The son inherits twice the daughter because it is the Islam obligation that Husbands are responsible of all marriage expenditures even if the wives work and earn money. The wife's money is only for her own investment to her own choice. Accordingly, males are in more need of money than females. Other cases are quite different. For example, if one died and has one daughter and his parents are alive. His daughter inherits 1/2 his wealth. His parents each equally gets 1/6 of his wealth.]
  11. Men are in charge of women, because Allah made men to be better than women. 4:34 [Hint: Allah made men better than women only in expenditures. Otherwise, they are equal or in some cases women are better than men. The verse 4:34 says: {Men are the support of women as God gives some more means than others, and because they spend of their wealth (to provide for them)}]
  12. Don't pray if you are drunk, dirty, or have touched a woman lately. 4:43. [Hint: The statement is misleading and not correct. The verse says: {O you who believe, do not perform your service of prayer when you are intoxicated until you are sure of what you are saying, nor when in a state of seminal pollution (due to intercourse sex with wife), until you have taken a bath,...}. The verse is very. Don't pray when drunk. If you are in a state of seminal pollution due to sex with wife, you should take bath. Is there any wrong ?]
  13. Women are feeble and are unable to devise a plan. 4:98 [Hint: Please read the the verse before this verse and the verse after it to understand the meaning. The verses 97-99 say, those who dye as unbelievers and claim that they were oppressed will be punished in the day of judgment because they didn't migrate to other lands. The exceptions are men, women, and children who are feeble and can't plan to migrate. Those will be forgiven by God. Is there any thing here against women?]
  14. "Unto the male is the equivalent share of two females." 4:176 [Hint: Refer to the Hint under item # 8]

Yes, men and women are treated equally in Islam but with different responsibilities in the Islamic society. women in Islam are honored more than in any other religion before Islam and even before the UN human rights. Men and women may not be treated equally in some countries but this not due to the Islam religion but due to the local cultures and traditions. Refer to related questions below.

Women are treated differently in every culture, sometimes in such a way that they are effectively equal to men and sometimes in a way that they must be inferior. Women are treated differently to men in Islamic cultures and some of these differences are codified in Shariah law.

  • Men may marry more than one wife, but a woman can not marry more than one husband.
  • Muslim men may marry Christian or Jewish women but a Muslim woman may not marry the Christian or Jewish man of her choice.
  • A woman is not permitted to be alone with a man
  • Clothing standards are more restrictive for Muslim women than for men.
  • In some countries a woman can not leave the house without permission or without any legitimate reason recognised by law.
  • According to some theologians, a husband has the right to administer corporal punishment to his wife if she refuses to make herself beautiful for him, refuses to meet his sexual demands or neglects her religious duties.
  • In Saudi Arabia women are not even permitted to drive motor cars, based on an interpretation of Shariah law.
  • In Pakistan, the Hudood Ordinance, enacted in 1979, has been criticized as leading to "hundreds of incidents where a woman subjected to rape, or even gang rape, was eventually accused of Zina (unlawful sexual intercourse or adultery)" and imprisoned. That risk has kept many women from trying to bring their attackers to justice.
  • Women are totally excluded from any religious deliberations.
  • The Quran states that financial transactions should be witnessed by two male witnesses or one male witness plus two female witnesses.
  • In questions of inheritance, male children should inherit twice the portion of female children. Sura 4.11-12: "A male shall inherit twice as much as a female. If there be more than two girls, they shall have two-thirds of the inheritance, but if there be only one, she shall inherit the half. ... (if a woman is an only child, she receives half the inheritance, while other male relatives receive the remainder)"

In Western countries, non-Muslims take relative equality of the sexes for granted, such that we notice minor differences, such as career promotion or pay rates. In the same countries, there are subtle differences in the way men are treated under Islam, even when women's rights are supposedly protected by secular laws. Women are certainly treated differently to men in Islamic cultures and some of these differences are codified in Sharia law. Undoubtedly there are rules intended to protect some rights for women, but the overall position is that women are treated as inferior to men:

  • Men may marry more than one wife, but a woman can not marry more than one husband.
  • Muslim men may marry Christian or Jewish women but a Muslim woman may not marry the Christian or Jewish man of her choice.
  • A woman is not permitted to be alone with a man who is not a close relative.
  • In Saudi Arabia women are not even permitted to drive motor cars, based on an interpretation of Sharia law.
  • In Pakistan, the Hudood Ordinance, enacted in 1979, has been criticised as leading to "hundreds of incidents where a woman subjected to rape, or even gang rape, was eventually accused of Zina (unlawful sexual intercourse or adultery)" and imprisoned. That risk has kept many women from trying to bring their attackers to justice.
  • Women are totally excluded from any religious deliberations.
  • The Quran states that financial transactions should be witnessed by two male witnesses or one male witness plus two female witnesses.
  • Under Sharia law, male children should inherit twice the portion of female children.
  • A father generally receives priority on child custody after divorce, except for infants -
There is no consensus among the scholars, but the general rule among the scholars is that when parents separate and they cannot agree on the issue of custody, then the mother would attain custody of the boy until the age of two and the daughter until the age of seven. However, this rule is conditional and dealt with accordingly, case by case.

Islam holds that men and women are equal in spiritual weight but have different societal functions. This has led to the charge that while men and women may be equally valuable as people that their legal rights are different. However, husbands are required to spend their income on their wives and children, whereas wives are not required to spend their income on their husbands and children.

Canwomen vote in Islam and what is the source of this knowledge?

Women can definitely vote in Islam. The Quran gives men and women equal rights, it's a different thing when some Muslim countries have leaders who suppress the rights of women. Pakistan which is a Muslim country actually had a woman president for a few years. Whenever anyone says that Islam doesn't give women equal rights that is far from the truth, it's all written in the Quran. Women's rights don't get suppressed because of Islam it's because of bad leaders and governments.
