The c compiler is actually two separate programs :"PREPROCESSOR",TRANSLATOR.The preprocessor reads the source code and prepares it for translator.while preparing the code , it scans for specials instructions known as preprocessor commands. These commands tell the preprocessor to look for special code libraries, make substitutions in the code, and in other ways prepare the code for translation in to machine language .the result of possessing is called translation unit .after the preprocessor has prepared the code for compilation, the translator does the actual work converting the program in to machine language . the translator reads the translation unit and writes the resulting "object module".an object module is the code in machine language. even though the output of the compiler is machine code, it is not yet ready to run : that is not yet executable because it does not have the required c and other functions included

Actually computer does not understand any high level language. it understands only 1s and 0s i.e what we call machine language.
