The goal of the North was at first to bring the Southern states back into the Union. Also they wanted to stop slavery.
President Andrew Johnson's plan for Reconstruction was three fold. First, he wanted the Southern states to be reinstated to the Union quickly and with little backlash. He wanted the Southern political power to be given to the common workers instead of back to the rich planters. Finally, he intended to be elected President outright.

Well if you are talking about the United States... The Europeans were the first to settle in the southern states such as Georgia or Texas. Spain, France, and England made many cultural changes that we still have today in the southern states. Hope this helps you lots:)

At first, when he became President, he did not want to abolish slavery like the southern states thought, he just wanted slavery from spreading westward. Then later, he changed his mind and decided he was going to abolish slavery.
The first 13 colonies became states with the end of the Revolutionary War and the Articles of Confederation. They did NOT consider themselves to be "United States" since they saw themselves as individual locations. It wasn't until 1789 with the Constitution that they were "united" as states. So, they called themselves "Colonies" and then "United States".
