Usually the belt is changed when the ribs shows signs of cracking, not necessarily at any given mileage point. If you think it should be replaced then do so. Having one break, while driving causes a lot of problems. You can't drive very far without it it as the car will overheat without the water pump turning.

There is a special tool I saw in a pawn shop that is just for that.
Insert a socket or wrench on the spring-loaded serpentine belt tensioner then pull back; the belt will loosen.
