After the Battle of Antietam in September of 1862, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia had to retreat from Maryland back to Virginia. Lee's evacuation from Maryland, for that moment of the war ended Confederate plans to take the war to the enemy, the Union.

The battle of Ortona started on December 20th, 1943. The Canadian 1st infantry were ordered to capture Ortona, by General Montegomery. Major-General Chris Vokes led the battle. The remaining Germans fled Ortona on the night of the 27th, but the battle was officially over on the 28th.

Battle of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam took place near the Antietam Creek, near Sharpsburg, Maryland in September of 1862. This was the first time Confederate General Lee took his forces into Union territory. Maryland was a slave state that remained in the Union. It was one of the bloodiest battles in American history. Union General Burnside, under the command of General George B. McClellan forced Lee back into Virginia as a result of the battle. Not long afterwards US President Lincoln visited General McClellan to see the battlefield itself.
