Edward Hargraves was know to be the first gold found in Australia recorded he was know to have traveled to California to take part in the gold rush but he found nothing and he realised that some of the gold fields there looked like some places in Australia (maquarie valley) so he set off to find gold with the help of John Lister and James Tom and claimed the reward of $5000 but after James Tom protested he only claimed $2381.

Another significant figure was Peter Lalor, an Irish immigrant who joined the gold rush. Due to the deplorable conditions on the goldfields, and the lack of miners' rights and representation in government, Lalor was unofficially "elected" on 30 November 1854 to be a more militant leader and voice for the diggers. Lalor led the rebellion that later became known as the Eureka Stockade, and the birthplace of Australian democracy.
James McBrien was the first person to officially find gold in Australia. This began the era of the Australian gold rushes.
