low trans fluid level.

Park for automatic transmissions, and Neutral for stick shifts.
Some Chrysler vans have a software update for the trans computer available at the dealer for harsh shifts. Other than that there could be an internal problem.
Low stands for Low Gear or 1st gear in the transmission.(I), is one I have never seen. If you mean 1 then that is 1st gear.
You would need a ring gear for an automatic.
If it is 4WD, put put the transfer case in Neutral, leave the automatic in Park or standard trans in gear. If it is 2WD, automatic would have to have driveshaft disconnect, standard trans just put in Neutral.
The GMC Sonoma 2.2 litre manual transmission hold 12 quarts of transmission gear oil. Keep in mind there is a big difference between gear oil and automatic transmission fluid.
over drive for the trans on thr end of the shifter if automatic or the last gear on a manuel trans
Normally, the automatic gear shifts from one 'size' to another. In a Prosmatec transmission, there is a sort of 'cone' of gears, which shifts 'progressively' from a higher to a lower gear (and vice versa). So generally, the shifting is comparitively more 'smoother'.
an automatic transmition is the one that does not need to be manualy shifted everytime a gear is needed when you drive. it shifts gears as the speed of the eninge increases.
You need to have the system checked for codes. The computer that controls the trans has most likely detected a problem and set a code. That can cause the trans to be locked into second gear.
