The pay varies. As an intern (turnuslege) the base pay is: 376.000 NOK

As a resident, you have several pay levels which increase as you gain experience:

Leger under spesialisering kategori A kr 411.000,-

Leger under spesialisering kategori B kr 446.500,-

Leger under spesialisering kategori C kr 482.000,-

Leger under spesialisering kategori D

(avtalt i lokale B-deler) reguleres med kr 25.000,-

The above information is what the Norwegian's call minimumslønn, or basis pay. All overtime, which in Norway is over 37,5 hours a week, is calculated based on your basis pay. The actual calculation for overtime is 0.0008 x Yearly Basis pay = overtime pay per hour.

I am a PGY-1 resident pathologist ( American btw) making 530,000 norwegian kroner per year working usually between 8:00-3:30. I am alotted 5,5 overtime hours per week to study at home. Pathology i one of the lowest paid physician professions in Norway, though we work very little. My wife (Norwegian btw) is a PGY-1 resident in psychiatry. She has on-call 1 in 14. She makes 640,000 Norwegian Kroner/Year. On Call pay is a little more complicated and i will not discuss it here.

Paradoxical to American medicine the GP or Allmenlege makes the most money of all the doctors in Norway on average. As an intern in a rural setting having light on-call 1 in 1 for 2 weeks then 1 weeks avspassering, which basically means vacation because of extra work, and 1 weeks work in the clininc from 8:00-3:00 I was making 120,000 Norwegian kroner per month which at that time was equivalent to yearly salary of 280,000 US Dollars per year. Imagine being finished with med. school and making 280,000 during residency, hmmm. I, as a pathologist in a public hospital, will never see that kind of money again.
