The convention of AD was not introduced until around 530 AD by Dionysius Exiguus and went almost unnoticed at the time, when he was calculating a series of future dates for Easter.

Prior to this various different calculations had been made without doubt all of them wrong, including this one.

BC was not used until 1627.

BC dates as we now call them, were usually based on local rulers and the years they had ruled.

Obviously they could not be called BC because Christ had not been born and no one knew when he would be.

Answer:

There are many ways of tabulating years. The Romans counted from the establishment of Rome (AUC meaning "Ab urbe condita" or Latin for "from the founding of the City (Rome)". This traditionally happened in in 753 BC.), Jews from the creation of the world (Day 0 in the Hebrew calendar is October 5, 3761 BCE) and Muslims from Muhammad's arrival at the city of Medina ( Friday, July 16, 622 ).

The AC/BC convention came into use in the middle ages as Christianity became a popular religion. Today some folks thing this is the only system in place and that folks before 1 AD would wonder what they were counting down to.

Today the use of CE (Common Era) in place of AD and BCE (Before Common Era) in place of BC is incresaing to acknowledge that not everyone is Christian.
