BMW 3 and 5 series equiped with the ZF 5HP19 are known for the "noreverse" problem. This occurs with the D Clutch Drum fails - cracks or breaks. If this is your problem I suggest checking out www.noreverse.org where you will find considerable information on the subject. NOTE - BMW dealer wanted over $5 to replace the transmission with a BMW rebuilt but I was able to locate a reputable transmission repair shop who rebuilt the transmission and replace the D Clutch Drum with the upgraded part for $3K.

If the transmission can be "reset" there only two possibilities.Disconnect the battery for 30 secondsHave the computer connected to a scan tool and reset.
You can add transmission fluid, to your 1987 BMW through the transmission dipstick tube. Using a funnel will make adding the fluid much easier.
On all BMWs if you look in the door jam sticker that contains the VIN number it will say something such as 530iA but it will say on the back only 530i. A = automatic transmission. The same car with a manual transmission will say 530iM. Essentially, the terms are interchangeable but saying 530iA gives you more detail.
