Take the glow plugs out and test with a link wire from live from battery to tip were wires normally connect earth the body of plug on battery post.if works will glow.Hot body watch it.If ones down car won,t start
You probably have a bad turbo.
It is either bad door seals or the turbo that you are hearing.
could be bad injector or turbo..
if a diesel blows white smoke, it is a good indication of a blown head gasket you have coolant getting into cylanders being 89 model i figure it doesnt have a turbo if a turbo is installed it can be a bad turbo
glow plug timer is bad or the glow plugs them selves are bad

The oil may be burned if your rings are bad. Also if it's a Turbo diesel it may have bad turboseals causing the oil to enter your intake thus being burned in your cylinder s.

Too much oil in the pan. Broken piston rings. Bad turbo bearing seals.
