In 2011-12, the Republican candidates included Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Mitt Romney. Romney won the nomination, after a long primary season in which there were other candidates who dropped out one by one (Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann, Herman Cain, etc). So in this election, the president is running for re-election, and Mitt Romney will be his opponent.

In 2007-2008, Barack Obama was a candidate and he faced a strong challenge from his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, before winning the nomination. His Republican opponent was Senator John McCain. Also running were several third party candidates, such as Ralph Nader and Bob Barr. McCain and Obama faced off in the election, and ultimately, Obama won.
