When President Lincoln had appointed US General Grant as the Union's general in chief, he was given the sacred title of Lieutenant General, used only for George Washington. Grant would not be able to capture Richmond unless he first defeated the Lee led Army of Northern Virginia.
In order to capture the Confederate capital city of Richmond, Grant wanted to cut the railway supply line that ran from Petersburg Virginia, north to Richmond. So far repeated Union attempts to take Richmond had failed. At least three or more Union tries at this goal were repulsed. Both Richmond & Petersburg we well fortified. Since attacking Petersburg seemed impossible with Confederate General Lee commanding the defence of both cities, Grant decided to lay siege to Petersburg in order to hope for a surrender. Almost 10 months passed before the siege succeeded. Because of the length of the siege, Lee had no choice but to withdraw from both Richmond & Petersburg. Grant cut the supply lines to Richmond. With Lee gone Grant;s forces were finally able to take Richmond. Lincoln, who had waited years to have this done, paid a visit to the captured city.

The Capitol of the Confederacy was at Richmond, VA. It was located very close to the US Capitol at Washington, DC. The war started with the Confederates threatening to march into Washington and capture it. So in 1864, the Union forces under General Grant made an attempt to drive through the Confederate lines and take their Capitol at Richmond. Since the war had been going on for 3 years, the defensive positions were very strong on the Eastern side of Richmond. Due to that and other reasons, General Grant moved his main force to the south of Richmond to attack. One reason was that he wanted to cut all railroad lines going into Richmond so they could not get fresh troops or supplies. Petersburg was on one of the rail lines and there was one more further West. The plan was to cut off Richmond from the south and then move in to capture the city.

McClellan planned a giant amphibious operation to capture Yorktown before moving on Richmond from the south. However, the Confederate Merrimack blocked the water route up the James River to Richmond, so McClellan decided to advance up the peninsula between the York and James rivers. By early April 1862 McClellan's forces had been transported by sea to the south end of the peninsula and were ready to take Yorktown. The Confederates had fewer troops than the North so they needed a diversion to keep the Union soldiers from taking Richmond. to capture Richmond, Virgina
