There are two main convicts in Great Expectations. The first is ultimately identified as Magwitch, who is Pip's friend from the swamp. The second is Compeyson. Compeyson was a scam artist, and Magwitch helped him. The scheme is discovered, and Magwitch ends up hating Compeyson. Magwitch fights Compeyson on the swamp just before they are both recaptured. The two later fight in a river that runs through London, and Magwitch ends up drowning Compeyson.

Compeyson knew where to find Magwitch because he had been tracking him with the help of Jaggers, who had hired him as a spy. Jaggers provided Compeyson with information about Magwitch's whereabouts, leading him to track down Magwitch at the sluice-house.
The knowledge that Magwitch was making a gentleman of Pip gave Magwitch a sense of pride and purpose, as he saw Pip's success as a reflection of his own redemption and transformation. It also brought joy to Magwitch, as he found fulfillment in the idea of positively influencing Pip's future.
