The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe came equipped with the 5.3L LY5 (gasoline) and LMG (Flex-Fuel) options, addition to other V8s. The best oil for this application can be determined by vehicle use (fleet, towing, highway, commute distance, etc), length of ownership (lease, until major failure), and intentioned costs of maintenance (minimum cost, or preemptive with OEM/OER premium components only). In general synthetic engine oils using the best Group IV and V base oils represent the premium lubricants. One must careful in purchasing oils as in the United States Group III oils (highly refined mineral oil) is considered and labelled as synthetic. In European markets such labelling is not permitted. That being said there are synthetic oils made from slack wax and natural gas to liquid reactions that produce base oils on par with Group IV and V, and by chemical definition synthetic. Mineral HD 5W30s allow for high performance at a lower cost than synthetics. Full synthetics include "German Castrol" (bottled) 0W30, "Belgian Castrol" (bottled) 0W40, and boutique oils offered by Redline and Amsoil. This application can use 0W and 5W30 for energy efficiency.
