The island of Manhattan (the primary borough of the five boroughs of New York City) is surrounded by three rivers, the Hudson River, Harlem River, and East River.

The East River, which flows down the east side of Manhattan and the west side of Queens and Brooklyn, is not a true river, but an estuary, or a tidal strait. Unlike a true river, it connects to the ocean on both sides. It flows south from the bay known as the Long Island Sound, down between Manhattan and Queens/Brooklyn, and into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Hudson River flows down the west side of Manhattan and the east side of New Jersey. The Harlem River branches off of the Hudson River and flows down over the top of Manhattan (which is the bottom of the Bronx) and into the East River.

See the Related Link below for a complete New York City subway map. The Harlem, Hudson, and East Rivers are all clearly labeled.
