No, it will not damage the engine, it is not an interference engine. The valves have enough room for the cylinder to come up even if the valves are stuck in the lower position . I am repairing the timing belt myself and it's really not that hard . The first try getting the belt on there i got the engine going but wouldn't stay running so not bad for my first try , It's tough when the belt breaks and you don't have the option of knowing exactly how everything is aligned you have to go by the book , so far it has cost me 12 dollars to fix mine for the new belt, spending 600 at the mechanic forget about that!
