It has often been misquoted as saying; "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it." This is a misquote of George Santayana who actually said; "Those who can not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Learning from history often times requires burning the past and rising once again, like a phoenix who has burned itself to rise up from the ashes remade. Bearing the burden of the past can often times be akin to digging ones own grave or carrying the burden of the cross one intends to be crucified upon. It is always prudent to learn from past history so as to avoid the mistakes made in the past but to live ones life in the past is to not live at all.
Time is not some endless stream of progressive events that unfold in some cosmic universe that leaves a trail of glory and defeat behind. Time is our own reflections of what has transpired and reflections are best left for vanity and mirrors. Now is the time and it is the only time for as soon as we experience now it is just as quickly a moment in the past and either we keep experiencing the now or we loose it while reflecting on the past. Every moment that is now that gets lost upon reflection of the past is just another now where opportunity was knocking while we were up in the attic browsing nostalgically through pictures and memories of the past. If we must reflect rather than simply experience the now, then let that be reflection upon a future where we would be better than who we have been and better than who we are now. But the only way to ensure being better now is by being now. Don't let the burden of the past weigh you down and if it does then burn it. Burn it and rise up once again as the glorious hero that you know you are now!
