In 1944, the region that lay outside the western limits of the Japanese Empire was India. During World War II, Japan had expanded its territories across various parts of Southeast Asia and the Pacific, but India remained a British colony and was not under Japanese control. The western expansion of the Japanese Empire primarily included areas such as the Philippines, Malaya, and parts of China, but did not reach India.
The Japanese empire of the mid-20th century occupied Korea, Manchuria, China, Indochina, the Philippines, and other parts of the Western Pacific and southeast Asia. Defeated in World War II, Japan lost all of this empire, along with part of the northern island groups (off Russia) that it previously controlled.

The area now known as the Republic of Turkey was the centre of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire existed from 1299-1923 and stretched over Southeast Europe, Western Asia, the Caucasus, North Africa, and the Horn of Africa.

The Japanese redirected their military focus from northeast Asia to southeast Asia during World War II primarily to secure vital resources and expand their empire. Southeast Asia was rich in oil, rubber, and other raw materials essential for sustaining Japan's war efforts. Additionally, this shift aimed to establish a greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, which sought to eliminate Western influence in the region and create a self-sufficient bloc of Asian nations under Japanese control. This strategic move was also a response to the changing dynamics of the war and the need for Japan to consolidate its territorial gains.
