However, when European explorer William Gosse "discovered" it in 1873, he named it Ayers Rock, after Sir Henry Ayers, the Premier of South Australia. ∙ 8y agoPrior to 1985, when Uluru was handed back to its traditional Anangu owners, it was known as Ayers Rock. This was the European name given to it by explorer William Gosse in 1873, when he became the first recorded European to discover this unique feature. Gosse was unaware of the indigenous name and, like most explorers, named his discovery after a significant figure - in this case, Sir Henry Ayers. Ayers was the Premier of South Australia, the colony which sponsored Gosse's expedition.
