The United States gained the land of California as part of the Mexican Cession after the Mexican-American war. After the United States acquired the land, many immigrants traveled here for work, including building railroads and mining. Towards the Civil War, California was looking to be admitted into the Union as a free state. The South did not like this idea, since it would upset the balance of power between free states and slave states in Congress. The Southern opposition was ignored, and California became a state as a provision in the Compromise of 1850.
