For the server ip location, you need to type Localhost, instead of your ip.
If the server is running on the same computer as you are playing on, the IP is "localhost". If it is running on another computer on the same Wi-Fi network, the IP is the computer's internal IP (Google "How to find your internal IP").
It means Local Area Network, it basically means you can play multiplayer without using your internet.
Unlike some games, Minecraft doesn't include a list of (randomized or any other form of displaying) online multiplayer games. Instead, it gives you the freedom of choosing that games appear on your multiplayer listing; you will need to create a list yourself. To do this, ask around! If you have friends who play Minecraft, perhaps they run a server of their own. Alternatively, you can try browsing the web for servers of your interest. If anyone else in your household plays Minecraft, you can play through LAN (Local Area Network) with them.

Computer networks allow otherwise isolated computers to communicate and exchange data rapidly. There are many different computer network configurations (e.g. star, ring, tree, mesh, backbone) so there is no single picture representing computer network.
Minecraft will hang if you play online because the Minecraft server IP is (probably) banned from the school network.
