Short answer NO. Long answer YES. The 5R55E transmission is the exact dimensions as the 4R55E transmission. 5R is a 5 speed, and 4R is a 4 speed. Though, as long as you don't swap the PCM on your Ford, it will stay a 4 speed.
There are solenoids and sensors that are not the same, including the TCC (torque converter clutch) and a couple other things.
If you are ready for your truck to be down a while, go for it.

You need to replace the speed sensor on the rear of the transmission.
1997 escort tranny's are a breed of their own you must replace it with a 1997 transmission.
Start by checking the transmission fluid level. If this is good then replace the transmission fluid and filter. If it continues it needs transmission work.
Not very many difference.. the 4r44e transmission has a couple more electronic componets than the old A4LD. The 4.0 motors DO carry a differant converter..But the basic design is the same. When you get into the 5R55E that's where the difference is. But either one will go out about every 100k or so.
A transmission fluid leak means that the plug may need to be replace, or the seal or gasket may need to be replace. As it could be caused by a work seal, or gasket, or a loose plug.
Simply to remove and replace it is about $1000-1250 at most garages. No trans work or cost of new unit included.

A bad you joint or a unbalanced driveshaft can cause the transmission rear main seal to leak. You will need to replace the transmission seal.
If that 700R4 was attached to a mechanical engine (or even a TBI engine, which only had basic electronic functions), it's not going to work... there's no engine ECM for that transmission ECM on the 4L60E to interface with.
Work needs to be performed. Also depends where it is leaking from. If pan is leaking just drain transmission fluid and install new pan gasket and refill transmission with fluid. If front seal leaking then you will have to pull transmission and replace front seal.
