I don't think so, the 12 volt starter battery is separated from the synergy drive battery, there even at different ends of the car in most models.

Yes it can explode if it gets hot enough in the car--I have tested this myself, accidentally....
Normally connecting the cables in reverse order can cause it to explode. Overcharging can also cause the battery to rupture but it is highly unlikely it would explode.
