Spina Bifida Occulta which means hidden, has long thought to have no symptoms and noneurological problems because the spinal nerves are not involved.

Recent studies may disprove this theory, after some researchers have found people with Spina Bifida Occulta may suffer more pain following a back injury than people with without the defect.

Much research on Spina Bifida is currently focussed on whether surgery done prenatally offers better results than surgery performed shortly after birth, genetics and folic acid. But there are others out there focusing on adults and Occulta

You may want to look into research programs to see if you could be considered for a study in the future. (Link provided.)

what does Spina bifida look like?

Often there is no physical difference in the appearance of a person with Spina Bifida Occulta than any other person. But sometimes there may be a patch of hair on the lower back, or a "dimple" on the lower back that is an indication of Spina Bifida Occulta.

My chin is 30 inches long do I have Spina Bifida?

The size of one's chin has nothing to do with Spina Bifida. If you have Spina Bifida, you would have a scar on your lower back where you had a hole when you were born, or if you have the more mild form, Spina Bifida Occulta, you might have a patch of hair or a dimple on your lower back that would indicate missing vertebrae or parts of vertebrae. Many people with Spina Bifida Occulta never know they have it.

Can someone with Spina Bifida have it all their life and not get diagnosis until they are in their thirties?

If they have the most mild form of Spina Bifida, called Spina Bifida Occulta, then yes, this is certainly possible. Spina Bifida Occulta often shows no outward signs and is many times not discovered until the person has an x-ray or other procedure in which the spine is seen.

What happens if you were not diagnosed with Spina Bifida as a child?

That is unlikely to happen unless you have the mildest form of Spina Bifida, known as Spina Bifida Occulta. If you were not diagnosed with it as a child, it might be discovered during an X-ray or MRI. It could explain any leg weakness, back pain, or bowel or bladder problems you have had, if you have had these problems. But many people with Spina Bifida Occulta do not have any symptoms at all other than a dimple or hair patch on the skin at the location on the spine where the defect is.

Does a small bulge on a newborn's spine mean Spina Bifida?

Not necessarily. Spina Bifida usually is a HOLE in the lower back, with spinal tissue showing or sticking out of it. It could be Spina Bifida Occulta, a more mild form of Spina Bifida, but the diagnosis needs to be made by a physician.

Can you be tested to see if you have Spina Bifida?

You can be x-rayed to see if you have Spina Bifida Occulta, the mildest form of Spina Bifida. If you have the more severe form, myelomeningocele, your parents would know it at least when you are born, if not before through ultrasounds.

Sometimes the only signs of it may in the lower spine area as a dimple, a small tuft of hair, or a small growth. If one has an imaging scan and a tethered spinal cord is noted, this can sometimes be a sign of spina bifida occulta as well.
