The size of one's chin has nothing to do with Spina Bifida. If you have Spina Bifida, you would have a scar on your lower back where you had a hole when you were born, or if you have the more mild form, Spina Bifida Occulta, you might have a patch of hair or a dimple on your lower back that would indicate missing vertebrae or parts of vertebrae. Many people with Spina Bifida Occulta never know they have it.

What is the life expectancy of people with Spina Bifida?

The life expectancy with Spina Bifida is the same for males and females; it is a normal life expectancy, as long as bladder infections and pressure sores are kept under control and the hydrocephalus (water on the brain) shunt is watched carefully for shunt failure and replaced as necessary. Spina Bifida is not fatal these days, now that modern shunts and antibiotics are readily available, at least in developed countries.

What was the first case of Spina Bifida?

Professor Nicholas Tulp, Born: Amsterdam, 11 October 1593; Died: The Hague, 12 September 1674, gave Spina Bifida its name and gave the first formative description of the disability. Although the term and real medical description are somewhat recent, it is estimated that Spina Bifida occurred almost 12,000 years ago.Giovanni Battista Morgagni (February 25, 1682 - December 6, 1771), Italian anatomist, linked lower-limb deformity and hydrocephalus (an excessive amount of cerebro-spinal fluid within the head) with Spina Bifida in 1761.

What can Spina Bifida do to you?

It can cause hydrocephalus (water on the brain) due to a defect in the lower skull that often accompanies Spina Bifida, and it can cause total or partial paralysis of the legs and feet, and lack of bladder and bowel control.

How does spina bifida affect a child emotionally?

Spina Bifida can affect the family, because the person that has it is most likely going to have a shorter life span. It also might affect them because they have to take care of the person, and watch them be disabled. Spina Bifida no longer is necessarily going to affect the lifespan. There are treatments for it now that can give the person a normal lifespan. They may need help in some ways from the family, but if they are cared for by themselves and/or family as well as physicians properly, they should have a normal lifespan.

What is the life expectancy of a kid with spina bifida?

I have a moderate form of spina bifida, called meningocele, and hydrocephalus but am quite independent. However, I depend on others to drive me places. I also use crutches to walk and anything further than 100 metres requires the use of a wheelchair. I also need to wear splints in order to be able to walk. The hydrocephalus also causes great difficulty retaining important information and being in school surrounded by a large group of my classmates was extremely difficult for me, as I would find myself drifting off after a couple of minutes and then would be suddenly aware that I had lost concentration. The spina bifida also caused nerve damage to my arms and unfortunately I can't write as quickly as a normal, healthy person does. For example, say it takes someone 30 minutes to write out a long paragraph - it would take me double that time to complete the same amount of work. I had a shunt inserted when I was 10 days old and it's still in perfect working order and had an operation on my back when I was 5 years old. In spite of my difficulties I have managed to live a good life so far and long may it continue.

Can Spina Bifida Occulta cause weakness and swelling in legs?

Spina Bifida Occulta which means hidden, has long thought to have no symptoms and noneurological problems because the spinal nerves are not involved.Recent studies may disprove this theory, after some researchers have found people with Spina Bifida Occulta may suffer more pain following a back injury than people with without the defect.Much research on Spina Bifida is currently focussed on whether surgery done prenatally offers better results than surgery performed shortly after birth, genetics and folic acid. But there are others out there focusing on adults and OccultaYou may want to look into research programs to see if you could be considered for a study in the future. What risk is there with neural tube defects?

There are multiple medical complications associated with spina bifida, especially the most severe form (spina bifida cystica - myelomeningocele, in which a part or parts of the spinal cord protrude through the skin of the back). With the second most common neural tube defect, anencephaly, death ensues rapidly (because the newborn cannot live for long without a brain in the skull). About three quarters of anencephalic babies do survive for a few days or even weeks (since primitive reflexes for suckling and elimination are controlled by the remaining brainstem and spinal cord).

What are some jobs 16 year old boys can do with Spina Bifida?

Any type of desk job would be perfect; computer-related work, typing, filing, etc. Depending on the arm strength, some physical work would be possible, moving things, cleaning, etc. Basically anything another person could do sitting down, without using the legs. There is a great demand these days for computer help, the young man with Spina Bifida could fix people's computers for a fee, lower than a professional would charge, until he can get the education to be a professional. Typing school papers for people is another possibility, as long as the paper is written by the student and not by the person who has Spina Bifida. Washing and/or drying dishes in a restaurant or fast-food place is another possibility. If he can carry a basket on his lap or connect it somehow to his wheelchair, he could work as a busboy in a restaurant. He could also use a cart in front of him, that he can push with his chair, and put the dishes on that.
