Yes, and I have done exactly that, and in NC, to boot. If you haven't seen it, it's because most companies prefer instead to send another truck to pick up the trailer instead of having the trailer towed, as well as not wanting to pay the additional costs of having the trailer towed with the truck. Restrictions are present, of course. For example, the tow truck driver must have all necessary endorsements. For example, if a vehicle pulling a tanker full of hazardous chemicals had to be towed, that tow truck driver would need a Hazmat endorsement and a tanker endorsement (in NC, the two endorsements together are an "X" endorsement, although some states show separate "H" and "K" endorsements for hazmat and tanker, respectively. Another thing tow truck drivers in NC need to be wary of is low tonnage roads, particularly in the Raleigh-Durham area. The weight limit on these roads is 6-1/2 tons per axle, and the fines for violations of this are very steep.

Persons with an Ontario Class DZ licence are licenced to drive vehicles such as straight truck, dump truck, cement truck, garbage truck and rescue & fire trucks - with airbrakes. A Class D licence is required to operate a vehicle over 11,000kg with a towed trailer not over 4600kg. Should your towed trailer exceed 4600kg, you will need to upgrade to a Class A licence.

An AZ license allows you to drive tractor-trailers and other large commercial vehicles, while a DZ license only permits you to drive straight trucks or other commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 11,000 kilograms. How would you describe an 18-wheeler What constitues a rig. Is it truck and trailer tractor and trailer or trailer and rig?

An 18 wheeler consists of a tractor (meaning something that pulls) and a trailer (meaning something that follows.) A semi tractor-trailer rig has a trailer that sits on top of the frame of the tractor on a coupling device called a "fifth wheel." The tractor has ten wheels with two on the front axle and four on each drive axle in the rear. The trailer has two axles with 4 wheels each. The tractor and trailer together are informally called a rig. Is that what you were after?

What is the difference between box truck and bobtail truck?

A box truck is a truck with a box attached to the chassis behind the cab. Think "U-Haul", "Penske", etc. A bobtail truck is a truck-tractor, also known as a prime mover, which uses a fifth-wheel hitch to tow a semi-trailer. Think of an 18-wheeler without the trailer attached.
