Yes they can.
The Apostle Paul for example in 1 Cor 7:9 is speaking about 'self-control' and 'passion' with regards to a reason for 'marriage'. Since this chapter is not about 'childbearing', we can reasonably deduce that engaging in sex 'without childbearing in mind' is acceptable to the Lord. Of course it being understood that for Christians it would be under the umbrella of 'marriage', not just living together in immoral relations.
