As long as there is oil in the engine it can run. If it has not had an oil change for a year even if it was stored I would change the oil/filter before driving this car.

You either take it to AutoZone and they will tell you why your check engine light came on in the first place so you can fix it. Or you go to AutoZone (or another place like it) and you buy the repair manual.
Because without it the computer would not work. It is pretty much the same as having an engine in a car.
