Autofill can be used to drag a series in either direction vertically or horizontally.
Dragging right or down increases the references and dragging left or up decreases them. For example if you have the formula =C5+C6 in a cell dragging it down will place the formula =C6+C7. Dragging right would produce the formula =D5+D6, dragging up would produce =C4+C5 and dragging left would produce =B5+B6.
If you had a month of the year in a cell dragging down or right would produce the following months and dragging up or left would produce the preceding months.
