Extremely small towns are not going to have any kind of detectives, but any reasonably sized town (any town 10,000+ would be a fair estimate) is going to have a detective division, which will consist of a homicide detective (or unit).
Generally, yes. However, there are far fewer available positions than people who want careers as detectives. You need to further your education post high school concentrating in such areas as law enforcement and criminal justice. A bachelor’s degrees will give you an advantage. In most cases you need to start at the bottom as a patrol officer and the work your way up to detective. See more information at the link below.

Job satisfaction for a homicide detective doesn't depend on the city that employs them, it depends on how good he/she is at their job and any appreciation or respect they get from doing their job well. There are no guarantees for job satisfaction based on location. It's dependent on the individual, where they're comfortable and where they're successful.
Nadine Garner plays Jennifer Mapplethorpe in City Homicide.
Homicide Detectives are simply highly experienced investigators who specialize in a particular crime. Their "jurisdiction" is the geographical boundaries of their governmental employer, whatever that may be. In reality, when investigating offenses; although these investigators are accorded a high degree of cooperation by other departments, they are granted no special authority, or deputization, in any other jurisdiction (e.g.: a New York City homicide detective cannot "arrest" you in Baltimore. Legally, a Baltimore officer would have to make the actual arrest).
