Yes a computer can be infected through e-mail. The most notable is through attachments. When an e-mail is sent the end user sees the e-mail is sent by a friend or an acquaintance and if the attachment is opened it's as if the end user clicked on an .exe file and the virus is installed onto the end users computer without their knowledge.
