A cross country event is a type of competitive horse riding event which is run over a long course (6km) that has fixed jumps (as compared to show jumping where the rails can be knocked down).

The maximum height of jumps is 1.2m but they can be quite big spreads (deep to jump over) and can incorporate water and strange objects to test the horses' trust of the riders. The course is over relatively natural countryside, but is groomed to minimise the risk of injury.

The competition is for the lowest score. A long time to complete the course, and refusal of the horse to go over a jump all add to the score.

The horse and rider can also be eliminated from the competition for several things, including: the rider falling more than once, the horse falling to the ground, and for jumping any part of the course in the wrong order or direction.

How is power used in horse riding?

The only way I know is through show jumping or cross country, any form of jumping. When coming to a fence if your horse has to much speed it will jump flatly and not gain any height over the fence. If it lacks power it will not only not have enough speed but also can't spring high enough to get over. So when coming to a fence you need to be at a steady canter/trot but with enough power to get up and over the fence.

Athletes compete by riding a horse over a barrier?

A horse and rider can compete against others in an arena with jump standards set up, this can either be called Jumping class, or a Hunter class in the Jumper class the rider has to jump with the best time, with the least amount of jumps knocked over. In a Hunter class the horse and rider also compete against other riders to see who has the greatest Hunt Seat Equitation (Who meets the standards best/looks the best) over the jumps/fences. There is also a competition called Cross Country. Cross Country is a race over a set amount of the length of the course set by the judges. The horse and rider must complete the course with the best time to win.

Are brushing boots allowed for pony races?

Hmm... not really, Horses usaully use Brushing Boots for Cross Country, maybe Jumping & possibly Dressage. I ride a Horse called Rupert, and we usaully do Cross Country and I always put on Brushing Boots on his Legs when galloping about and tackling over fences. Jumping if fine, horses can wear them, but they are mainly for protection. I'm 95% positive with what I said, but it's best to contact whoever is running the races (If you are entering in one). Just remember they are there for protection!

Are Thoroughbred horses good for cross county jumping?

Because of a Thoroughbred horse's athletic and powerful haunches and muscles Thoroughbred's can excel in most disciplines. TBs are often used for cross country as they are powerful enough to get themselves and riders over fences and also fast enough to get around the course. TBs are quite good at xcountry if they are trained or ridden that way. They are good at jumping, dressage, racing and other sports as well.

Is there such thing as a jumping pleasure horse?

Not sure what you are referring to but in Hunt Seat riding "pleasure" and "jumping" are not the same thing. A "pleasure" class is on the flat and a "jumping" class is over fences. A horse can do both if it istrained to do so but obviously not at the same time.

Is horse racing part of the Olympics?

Horse racing itself is not an olympic event. There are, however, equestrian events. The equestrian events comprise of equestrian showjumping, dressage and cross country. Cross country tests the jumping, bravery, speed and stamina of the horse. Dressage the control in walking, trotting and cantering. Showjumping reveals control, accuracy and athleticism. The competitor with the least penalties over the course of the event will be the winner. There are also different competitions for individuals who can compete in stadium jumping and dressage.

What is horse jumping over fence called?

It's just called jumping. The Jumping shows are called Show Jumping, and then Hunter-Jumper. From what I have heard, Show Jumping is based on speed and focuses more on the horse than the rider. Hunter-Jumper is about the rider.

What is cross country horse riding?

In horseriding, cross-country is one phase of three in the popular "eventing" discipline combining dressage, cross-country and showjumping over one, two or three days to give an overall score. Cross-country is made up of long gallop stretches over open land, and different varieties of solid, natural jumps. It comprises not only the typical log or brush fences but also drops, water jumps, steps, banks, coffins, ditches, trakehners and many other types of jump. Many see cross-country as the most dangerous of English riding disciplines as it is high-speed, with many risks throughout and many jumps are designed to scare horse and rider. It is, however, one of the most popular disciplines with spectators.
